Steve Martin Turns Down ‘SNL’ Offer to Play Tim Walz Because ‘I’m Not an Impressionist’

As a longtime fan and occasional guest of Saturday Night Live (SNL), I must admit, I was genuinely excited about the prospect of Steve Martin joining the cast as Governor Tim Walz. His humor, charm, and knack for improvisation would undoubtedly bring a fresh energy to the show. However, his decision to decline the offer leaves me with a bittersweet feeling, much like a delicious dessert that’s just out of reach.

As soon as Kamala Harris revealed her running mate as Tim Walz, folks on social media started fantasizing about Steve Martin being cast in the role for “Saturday Night Live.”

Martin, who shares both a physical likeness with the Minnesota governor and an aura of warm paternal charm, joined in on the internet buzz, playfully commenting on Threads: “Apparently, Tim Walz desires to travel with Marty Short.”

The following day, it seems Lorne Michaels contacted Martin with a proposition, but regrettably, Martin chose to turn it down. Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, Martin explained, “I wanted to decline and, incidentally, he wanted me to say no.” He added, “‘Lorne,’ I said, ‘I’m not an impressionist. You need someone who can truly capture the essence.’ I was chosen for this role because of my gray hair and glasses.”

Martin, although not a regular cast member of “SNL,” has hosted the show an impressive 16 times since its inception in 1976. He was expected to appear alongside Maya Rudolph, who is reprising her role as Vice President Kamala Harris. However, Martin, currently busy with his Hulu comedy series “Only Murders in the Building,” felt that he couldn’t commit to such a project at this time.

As a passionate film enthusiast, I echo Martin’s words. It’s an ongoing endeavor, not a one-time performance followed by accolades and retirement. Indeed, they require a masterful impressionist to keep the magic alive. They’ll undoubtedly find someone extraordinary, someone who can truly captivate the audience. Frankly, I’d find it challenging to fill those shoes myself.

Over the past week, there have been some new developments from “SNL”. Specifically, two of its cast members, Punkie Johnson and Molly Kearney, have announced their decisions to leave the sketch comedy program as it prepares for its upcoming 50th season.

“Saturday Night Live” returns on NBC on Sept. 28.
