As a passionate advocate for independent cinema, I am thrilled to see Parallax acquiring these remarkable titles from this year’s Locarno lineup. The stories of Aruan Anartay and Mickey Lai resonate deeply with me, given my lifelong dedication to uncovering unique voices in filmmaking.
As a passionate cinephile who has attended numerous film festivals over the years, I am thrilled to see Parallax adding two more titles from this year’s Locarno lineup to their roster. Aruan Anartay’s “Joqtau,” competing in the Concorso Cineasti del Presente, and Mickey Lai’s short film “WAShhh,” screening in the Pardi di Domani—Concorso Internazionale, both caught my attention during my festival visit. I can’t wait to see these films and experience the unique storytelling from these talented directors. Their work is sure to captivate audiences with their fresh perspectives and innovative techniques.
The “Joqtau” film, crafted by Short Brothers and Alem Oner, serves as Anartay’s first full-length feature. This movie narrates the tale of a young Kazakh named Darkhan, who endures the heartache of losing someone dear by conjuring up an imagined voyage with his deceased grandfather, a journey that never transpired in reality. Anartay is renowned for his short films, which are set in the Central Asian steppes and provide a unique perspective on universal themes such as separation, reunion, and persistent affection.
Locarno is set to stage five viewings of the film “Joqtau”. One screening will be exclusive for the industry, another for the media, while the remaining three are open to the general public. The movie is currently accessible in all regions except those within the Commonwealth of Independent States, regarding distribution.
In a Malaysian National Service Camp, during the dead of night, a Chinese trainee girl is instructed by her teacher to guide her diverse group of female trainees, who are of different ethnicities, to clean soiled sanitary napkins.
The short film “WAShhh” is Lai’s third production, a collaboration between Ninjia Production, Janji Pictures, and Rockall Films from Malaysia and Ireland. Lai, an emerging talent, has made a significant impact with her debut short film, “The Cloud is Still There” (2020), which was chosen for Busan, Clermont-Ferrand, and Shanghai international film festivals. Her second work, the documentary short “A Worm, Whatever Will Be, Will Be,” garnered the jury award at SeaShorts.
The brief, 23-minute black-and-white production will be shown on three different occasions from the 10th to the 13th of August. It can be viewed in all regions excluding Malaysia.
