As a movie reviewer who has traversed the globe attending film festivals and screenings, I must confess that “The Cloud and the Man” has left me spellbound. Hailing from the vibrant Bengali-language cinema of India, this enchanting tale transcends cultural boundaries, striking a universal chord that resonates deeply within the human spirit.
On August 9th, Outsider Pictures will introduce the award-winning Bengali film “The Cloud and the Man” (originally titled “Manikbabur Megh”) to American moviegoers.
The movie that’s causing a stir in Bengal since its release on July 12 is set to debut first in Chicago and San Jose.
Under the guidance of first-time director Abhinandan Banerjee, the movie narrates the tale of Manik, a solitary resident of Kolkata who establishes an unusual friendship with a cloud. This story delves into concepts such as solitude, bonding, and metamorphosis.
The main character in this movie is Chandan Sen, with Debesh Roy Chowdhury and Bratya Basu joining him as part of a larger cast.
“The film ‘The Cloud and the Man’ has garnered significant international acclaim, being featured in over 25 film festivals worldwide such as Tallinn Black Nights, Hong Kong, Edinburgh, and Santa Barbara. Moreover, it has amassed several awards, including the Netpac Award for Best Asian Film at the Kolkata International Film Festival.”
As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that I, personally, secured the rights for a captivating film following a unique love story—between a man and a cloud! This extraordinary tale caught my eye after a fruitful encounter with producer Monalisa at the Film Bazaar in Goa.
The movie, titled “Whispers of Fire & Water,” was created by Bauddhayan and Monalisa Mukherji under Little Lamb Films, the same production house that successfully showcased Lubdhak Chatterjee’s direction in various film festivals such as Locarno, Sao Paulo, Kerala, and El Gouna.
Banerjee stated, “Our film was well-received during its North American debut at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. We’ve always felt there would be an American audience interested in a movie like ours. Now, we’re excited to see how both Indian expatriates and global viewers respond to our production.”
Bauddhayan and Monalisa Mukherji commented, “We’re excited to share our film with movie enthusiasts in Chicago and San Jose. Our fellow Calcuttans have been incredibly supportive. We’re curious if Manikbabu will receive the same level of appreciation and applause from American audiences. Can’t wait to find out!”
Based on positive word-of-mouth, Outsider Pictures intends to broaden the distribution of the film. Their latest offerings have been “Adios Buenos Aires” and “Lullaby”, while “The Mother of All Lies” is set to be released next.
