As a dedicated cinephile who has followed the reality TV scene for decades, I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Kim Johnson, a true pioneer and icon in the world of “Survivor.” Her story resonated with me on so many levels, as she defied age stereotypes and proved that determination, resilience, and a strong will to survive are not bound by numbers.
79-year-old Kim Johnson, who finished second on “Survivor: Africa” (Season 3) and holds the record as the oldest female contestant in the show’s history, has sadly passed away.
The place and cause of death was not immediately available.
Jeff Probst, the long-time host of “Survivor” since its premiere in 2000, paid a heartfelt tribute to Johnson on Instagram, speaking for the whole CBS team.
I deeply mourn the loss of Kim, an extraordinary pioneer on “Survivor” who left an indelible mark on the game and on me personally. At 56 years old, she defied age stereotypes by setting a record as the oldest woman to ever win an immunity challenge. She made it to the final two and even earned votes to claim victory. Her determination and resilience were inspiring, proving that age is simply a number and that one should never be afraid to take risks and challenge themselves. I will forever cherish the privilege of working with her and being part of her story.
Ethan Zohn, the winner of “Survivor: Africa” by a 5-2 vote, shared a tribute on Instagram yesterday as well. He said, “Goodbye Kim Johnson. It was an honor to consider you my friend and a unique experience to share the final tribal council with you.” Zohn added, “I’ll always remember that planters punch in your memory!”
56-year-old Johnson, a former school teacher from Cleveland, Ohio, had previously managed an indoor tennis club and owned a sports clothing store. Prior to appearing on “Survivor: Africa”, she was actively engaged in various sports such as running, tennis, weightlifting, camping, hiking, fishing, sailing, golfing, horseback riding, thoroughbred horse racing, and playing various games. Her CBS “Survivor” biography portrays her as someone who is energetic, logical, and tenacious, with a touch of quirkiness.
Johnson is survived by her three children, Wendy, Kerry and Teddy.
